Antique Heavy Barrel Kentucky Style Halfstock Percussion Rifle, made by James Bown and retailed by Kaufman & Co. of New Orleans, NVSN, .38 cal., 36.5'' octagonal barrel with buckhorn style sights, measures 1'' across flats, marked ''James Bown/Pittsburgh'' ahead of ''M. Kaufman & Co./New Orleans, La'' on top flat, has full-length bottom rib with two iron ramrod ferrules; flat lockplate and matching hammer are unmarked; brass furniture includes scrolled finger-rest trigger guard, 5.125'' patchbox with oval lid opening to butt trap containing linen for patches, crescent buttplate with long top/bottom tangs, left-side lock screw escutcheon, nosecap, 2.675'' rear ferrule retaining the plain hickory ramrod; artificially-striped hardwood (appears to be maple) halfstock has carved fluted cheekrest, raised aprons at either side of lock. Double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is near fine retaining approx. 90% smooth brown barrel finish (appears to be original), lockplate and hammer are smooth gunmetal gray, brass with medium age patina. Stock is solid and smooth showing lovely striping (esp. to buttstock), scattered marks (mainly to left side) and much varnish finish. Edges and markings are sharp; action is strong and smooth; set triggers function correctly; bore is clean showing light frosting and deep rifling. A doubly rare rifle, especially so with this prominent maker and southern retailer. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)(Doug Beneck collection)
