Henry E. Lehman was trained by fellow Lancaster, PA craftsman Melchoir Fordney from 1828-1831. Lehman then worked with George Tryon from 1831-1834 and then finally set out on his own producing contract trade rifles to the Indian Bureau and western traders. His first trade rifles were flintlock full stocks then percussion and ultimately half tocks. By the 1860s Henry Lehman had outsold the competition for the Plains Indian trade. According to records, captured Lehman rifles outnumbered Henrys, Hawkins and Golchers by almost 100 to 1. These short heavy built rifles were built in large caliber flint and percussion for hard use. Their evolution marked the standards for Plains Rifles to come and provided an economical rifle for the common man. No visible Serial number.
