Historic U.S. Springfield Model 1863 percussion rifle, .58 caliber, 39.5” barrel, full length wood stock, three barrel bands, sling swivels, iron ramrod, left side of stock by breech stamped “2 USCT”. This rifle was previously in the Col. William Orbelo collection with copies of documents related to its display at the Story of Texas exhibit in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum from 2009 to 2011. Accompanying the gun is also a CDV of a man in a suit with hand inked inscription: “GREAT GRANDFATHER HWC MUSKET TAKEN FROM NEGRO YANKEE 1865 AT PAMETTO RANCH, TEX”. Also included is a copy of p. 327 of the “Hand Book of Texas, Vol. II” which describes the Battle of Palmito (sp) Ranch on May 11, 1865, where black troops under the command of Lt. Col. David Branon were sent to take possession of Brownsville, TX after the surrender of Generals Robert E. Lee’s and Joseph E. Johnston’s forces .
