Staff Sergeant Virgil F. Pelon was a medical NCO of the 10th Field Artillery Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division during WWII. The 3rd Division was the only division to see combat on all European fronts, including North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. Elements of the 3rd Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne would capture Hitler’s mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden and the 10th Field Artillery Battalion was one of the units that would capture the mountain retreat with Pelon being among them. This gorgeous tablecloth features the coats-of-arms of the Government Districts of Bavaria embroidered in the center of the tablecloth with the coats of arms bordered by an embroidered family, rooster, and frog on four sides. The tablecloth is bordered by flowers with flower bushes in the corners and is in very good condition with no rips, tears, or damage to the cloth. Included with the tablecloth is a handwritten note, dated 7-10-97, by Virgil Pelon reading “This tablecloth w/ the coats of arms representing the Gov’t Districts of Bavaria was taken by me from Hitler’s underground living quarters near Berchtesgaden (It was called Der Berghof) on May 5, 1945.”. Also included the original note by Virgil that came with the tablecloth in 1945 reading “Just a little souvenir from Hitler’s mountain home in Berchtesgaden. Virgil.” Yet another item included with the tablecloth is a copy of a 1951 newspaper article describing Virgil Pelon's souvenirs from Berchtesgaden and highlighted in the article is the tablecloth. Also included in this lot is the book “History of The Third Infantry Division In World War II” autographed by SSgt Virgil Pelon on the title page. The book has a partially separated binding and the front is faded but the autograph is clear and distinct on the title page. A bracelet with Virgil's name and his service number is included as well as a watch fob with the initials "ERB" on the bottom. Also included is the book “3rd Division Summary of Operations in the World War” book with battle maps, a copy of his honorable discharge papers, a United States Infantry Association membership card, a Societa Neapolitan membership card. Also included are handwritten notes from Virgil for gifts that he sent home during the war as well as a handwritten letter from Pelon, dated November 21, 1941. Numerous photos, pillow shims, maps, and other personal effects of Virgil Pelon are included as well. A wonderful grouping of personal WWII relics and an artifact from Hitler's mountain retreat.
