I.E.D. (Improvised Explosive Device), acrylic on linen, 36”x36”x1.5” by artist Martin Cervantez.
Master Sergeant Martin J. Cervantez is a former Artist in Residence at the U.S. Army Center of Military History where he was responsible for capturing the Army's history on paper and canvas. Recently asked why he rarely paints abstract depictions of war, Martin answered that "War is the abstraction of peace. The I.E.D. realized then, is the abstraction of life, form, and good reason."
In June 2020, the United States Army will open it’s National Museum where several pieces of Martin's art and one of his battlefield sketchbooks will be on displayed in the inaugural exhibit. The art created by artist Cervantez while on active duty is in the Army’s permanent collection, and belongs to the people.
