HAIR COMBS. Each 6.5” long with attached handle, card 3.8 x 2.6” with about 350 iron pins. Illustrated paper label has elegantly dressed African American lady & gentleman each holding one of these combs. We could not find “F. ELLS & SONS” but did find the Feb. 9 1858 patent by C. Sumner Dickerman of Lansingburgh, NY. Patent for Improved hand-card for currying horses, cattle and other purposes. The display cards from museum read “Three “Jim Crow” cards given to plantation negroes to be used as combs” We can not find reference to another of these very rare African American cultural items. Deaccessed from Charleston Confederate Museum for restoration fund. CONDITION: very good overall, one of the three combs is cracked through where screw attaches handle. The manuscript descriptive note is cracked with losses. Soiling and light staining. PROVENANCE: Deaccessed from Charleston Confederate Museum for restoration fund. (02-19464/JS). $1,000-3,000.
