IMPORTANT & HISTORICAL STERLING SILVER FLASK

BELONGING TO CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH 49ER HENRY E. ROBINSON. This exceptionally artistic flask measures 6 3/4" by 4”. The flask is marked, “STERLING” on the inside of the cup & on the inside base of the screw top. The outside is beautifully engraved w/ grape vines & the face of a bearded gentleman that appears to be Bacchus, the God of Wine. The other side of the flask has intricate architectural & foliate engraving that encompasses the name, “H. E. Robinson San Francisco.”. The removable cup reveals a screw top flask w/ the stopper being secured to the body of the flask w/ a silver chain. Henry E. Robinson left Connecticut to travel to California early in 1849. He was a wealthy entrepreneur & was one of the original state senators of the First Legislature of California. He was the Postmaster of Sacramento City & was one of the founding fathers of California statehood when it was admitted to the Union on Sept. 9, 1850. Robinson became extraordinarily rich during the California Gold Rush & lived in San Francisco from 1849-1879. This flask, though unsigned, is likely a product of Shreve & Company who were preeminent California jewelers during the period. The flask weighs nearly 13 ounces & was likely given to Henry Robinson in recognition of his service to the citizens of California. CONDITION: the flask has a few tiny, scattered, shallow dents & dings but remains an exceptional work of esthetic & historic merit. (02-15652/BF). $800-1,200.
