These are classic unsigned American Kentucky pistols w/ early features found on known makers from Northamton & Lehigh County, PA. Few pairs of American flintlock pistols survive from this era. Consignor John Montague found one of these pistols at Baltimore Gun Show in about 1980 recognizing its mate that his friend Joe Kindig owned. They were reunited after long discussion as to who should own the pair, John has retained them till this final offering of his collection. The Kindig gun is pictured on pg. 55 (plate 167) of Sam E. Dyke’s 1959 “Thoughts on the American Flintlock Pistol”. CONDITION: very good overall w/ some restoration. Minor wood repairs do not detract from aesthetics. Smooth iron patina, brass smooth mottled mustard patina, wood has hand worn patina w/ traces of varnish. Mechanically functional though one pistol lacks half cock, bores are clear & pitted. PROVENANCE: ex-collection Joe Kindig, Jr.; The Collection of John Montague. (01-20729/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.
