PISTOL WITH FOLDING BAYONET CARRYING THE CALDECOT FAMILY CREST. Cal. approx. 44. NSN. Bbls. 2 1/2". Dual unmarked bbls. Mounted on the right bbl. is a folding, spring loaded, 2 1/4" blade. Brass bolster w/ brass inline flint boxlock firing mechanism. Left side of boxlock is engraved w/ a spray of arms & an oval shield that reads "PATRICK LIVERPOOL". Right side has some foliate engraving & features the spring catch which retains the bayonet blade in the closed position. Iron cock & pan. 1 Piece wood grips w/ rear silver escutcheon. Escutcheon features a griffin & her young in a nest which is the family crest of the Caldecot family. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass bound wooden case that measures 8" x 11" x 5 1/4". A brass escutcheon/handle at the center of the top is engraved w/ a similar griffin on nest device that appears on the pistol escutcheon. The name engraved below the griffin reads "Charles Caldecot, R.N.". Lieutenant Charles Caldecot entered the navy in July of 1808 & served on many ships & under many captains until leaving the service in 1828. The case is bound on all sides in brass & has a brass key escutcheon. The casing is quite cleverly converted patented writing desk on bottom level. The interior is lined w/ blue velvet. A sm. paper file folds into the lid & is secured by a silver bar catch. The file has an attached paper label that reads "THOMAS WOOLFIELD, DESK & DRESSING CASE MANUFACTURER No. 71 & 72 CHURCH ST. LIVERPOOL.". The segmented case houses the pistol, several rnd. shot, a bullet mold & powder flask. Along with the pistol related items, is a traveling ink well w/ nautical motifs, a folding portable coin scale & a 2 piece brass screw together snuff box featuring a bust of Napoleon w/ the words "BONAPARTE PRIMVS CONSVL". The box is dated on the bottom "ANNO VIII". Year 8 of the Napoleonic calendar is 1799. CONDITION: bbls. & blade have a medium gray mottled patina. Brass has a mellow mustard patina. Engraving on the boxlock is a bit worn but remains quite legible. Lock holds both full & half cock, and sliding safety functions, clear clean faux rifled bores. Grip shows moderate wear w/ a sm. crack extending about 3/4" back from the boxlock. The case generally shows light wear but has a shrinkage crack in the center of the front running through the key escutcheon. Items contained in the box generally show light wear & are fully functional. Good bores. (01-17359/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
