INSCRIBED JAMES CONNING CONFEDERATE STAFF & FIELD

OFFICER’S SWORD. James Conning prior to the Civil War sold Ames swords in his Mobile, Alabama store. His staff sword is copied from an Ames model 1850 staff & field, w/ changes like “CS” in decorated basket instead of US & plain undecorated quillon. The blade would still be rounded on the top edge and bottom edge leading into sharpening but would have unstopped fuller. Conning normally numbered his swords w/ matching numbers on each scabbard mount & leather scabbard body on unetched swords. This sword has 28 1/2" blade numbered “123”, scabbard throat numbered “187” and engraved “Made by / James Conning / Mobile”. Period inscribed name maker in script only partially discerned and appears to read: “Capt. R? (G or J) Johnson / Co. – 27th -----". The scabbard body is also numbered “187”. The middle mount & drag are restorations. CONDITION: sword is very good overall, gray blade w/ staining & areas of pitting, grip is very good w/ complete leather & wire, hilt & pommel are uncleaned w/ a mottled medium mustard patina, leather scabbard body is especially good w/ matching throat & as noted drag & middle mount are restorations. (02-15402/JS). $12,000-15,000.
