INTERESTING BREECH LOADING SHOTGUN BY A.A. SMITH

OF LEOMINSTER, MASS. CIRCA 1874. Cal. 28 Ga. NSN. Bbl. 35", has attached full length forend that has brass cap. Hickory ramrod mounts through 1 pipe & brass thimble. Top of bbl. engraved "A. A. Smith Leominster Mass. 1874". Bbl. pivots allowing breech section to go to the right, actuating extractor removing special cartridge w/ integral nipple. Once pivoted back in position, a knurled collar can be rotated holding bbl. in place. Cartridge is fired by boxlock type mechanism. Internal hammer is cocked by thumb spur on right side of top tang. Mahogany buttstock has steel & brass trigger guard, heavy brass buttplate w/ 6" return & German silver circular patchbox on right side. Right side of stock has folky carved cheek rest. Consignor's tag indicates that "A. A. Smith's inventions are on display at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont." CONDITION: very good to fine, appears to be as mfg. w/ black lacquer finish on metal parts, now w/ patches & cleaning. Lacquered stocks have scratches. Bore is fairly shiny & does exhibit rudimentary rifling. Interesting action is operable, but hammer remains to far forward & sometimes locks up breech mechanism. An interesting piece that bears further study. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19726/MGM). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
