Identified British Pattern 1856 Volunteer Rifle with Trophy Cup
Made by John Dickson and Son of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1859. This rifle is known as a "Volunteer Rifle" which those individuals assembled and shot competitively to hone their skills in peacetime. This particular rifle was presented to "PFC Appleby" in "1871" when he was with "H Company" as demonstrated by the silver engraved stock banner. Accompanying this rifle is a sterling silver cup marked "Presented with the Goban Challenge Cup 16th Sept. 1882 Won by Color Serg. Appleby H-Company 80 Points". Whether he won this contest with this rifle is a mystery. Rifle has standard blued round .577 caliber rifled barrel with blade front sight, rollercoaster 1100 yard flip sight, Edinburgh Proofs and "25" gauge caliber markings. Barrel is dovetailed for saber bayonet lug. Case-hardened percussion lock marked "John Dickson and Son Edinburgh 1859" with floral engraved border and controlled by single trigger with chain nipple protector. Full military walnut stock with iron furniture, silver presentation plaque, W&CS 936 (Webley & Scott Assembly number) mark, T&CG ramrod spoon mark (Thomas and Charles Gilbert) with ramrod channel stamped "Whitehouse" (stockmaker from Birmingham). Silver Cup stamped "Pint" with Elkington & Co. Silversmith mark. John Estock Collection. CALIBER: 577. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall fair with metal turning a silvery brown patina with some light oxidation. Action has faded to a brown patina. Wood looks to have been lightly cleaned with usage dings and marks. Bore is frosted with light pitting and visible rifling. Good mechanics. A unique rifle with more research still undone.
