W. Tyler/Co. D/W.S.S.”. This well-known Henry is pictured in Les Quick’s book on Henry rifles from the Doug Beneck Collection. W.S.S.stands for Western Sharpshooters and were the U.S. Volunteers under Lt. Colonel John M. Birge, Commanding. Tyler served with both the 14th Missouri and the 66th Illinois; he was mustered into service on Nov. 9, 1861 and was discharged on Sept. 17, 1864 Birge’s Sharpshooters served at Fort Donelson, TN; Shiloh, TN; Corinth, MS; Resaca, GA; Atlanta, GA; Peach Tree Creek, GA and Jonesboro, GA. Tyler died on Aug. 24, 1903 in Free Soil,MI. This early Henry is in overall good to very good condition showing a beautiful dark patina to the barrel assembly and terrific taffy colored, un-cleaned patina to the brass frame and butt plate; the action is good the bore fair to good and the butt stock is very good +. A great Civil War soldier’s inscribed Henry rifle who belonged to one of the premier Sharpshooter regiments that utilized weaponry
