Handle length 16", blade length 8" width 5" , pick length 5". During the Indian Wars the US Army found that the M1873 Trowel Bayonet while an improvement over the singular bayonet, it did not provide the soldier with an adequate entrenching tool. In the 1890's the Army purchased a limited supply of these. The pick and blade pivoted on the end of a short wooden handle with ball on end for grasping. The pick and blade unit pivoted at the end of the handle to give the soldier different means for entrenching. A very interesting and rare US Army experimental piece. **Wood handle is excellent with just a few very minor dents in the ball end of handle. Still retains some of the black paint in the pivot area. Shovel head and pick show use but no rust, dents, chips, or major damage. Overall in excellent condition.** $700-$900
