Inscribed French Model 1874 DA revolver, 11mm caliber, 4.5” barrel, S/N N737, metal surfaces show old scattered pitting and erosion, action partially working, checkered wood grips are worn; butt of revolver is inscribed “A. Dreyfus”. This lot is accompanied by a typed and hand written letter dated 9 Aug. 1997 and signed by a Paul Narkin to a Mr. Renzoes stating: “I came in possession of this revolver when I was an officer in Paris during September and October of 1944, just after the liberation of Paris and I helped quell a riot of Americans at the Club Lido. I obtained the gun at the CLUB LIDO where the boxer George Carpentier was the manager. He told me that this gun was found a short time before in the grounds of the Ecole de Militaire by French workers looking for buried munitions when under German occupation”. The lot is also accompanied by additional copies of pages from various sources related to Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) and a book, written in French, entitled “L’Affaire Dreyfus” which is well-known in French history as a serious “cause célèbre” of early political and social conditions in France prior to the outbreak of WW II.
