J. Frank Hunt was a well respected Cowley County Deputy Marshall& hardware merchant, who was assassinated in 1880. This collection of person items was sold by a family member with the following provenance: a typed document that reads "Faye Duncan - Hunt/R.Rt. 1 , Gen. Del./Conway Springs, Kansas/2nd of Au. 1927 BILL of SALES Sold to Mr. Robert C. Skidmore of Fort Worth, Texas for the sum of$100. (ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS), the items listed below. They has belonged to my father, Deputy Marshal, J. Frank Hunt of Caldwell. He was killed in 1880 and all of his things are own free and clear by me, to do with as I wish. No other member of my family has any claim. Remington .38 pistol with holter and knife. Red tool box with father's name on it. Photo likeness and badge in small leather case. Gold pocket watch with F.H. 1876 engraved on it. Leather case for hand cuffs Box of bullets for pistole Hat and Boots Foot note: This Remington pistol is the one that killed George Flatt." Signed by Faye Duncan - Hunt and notarized & signed by J. R. Duncan. The tool box described in the letter is a locking box of wood construction painted red with 'J. Frank Hunt D.M. Caldwell . Kans." painted on the front face in orange and is decorated with brass tacks with "F H" on the top lid. The photo likeness is cased tintype of the man with ornate bird scene on the outside with decorated plush interior which a star over crescent shaped bage that reads "DP. Marshal Caldwell". The box of bullets is a UMC cartridge box containing 49 rounds of .38 Long Rimfire. The leather case for hand cuffs is a smooth brown leather belt loop case with replaced front strap. The gold pocket watch mentioned is not present, and it it's place is a German made straight razor marked "The Prince". The Pistol is a Remington 1861 Army revolver #20486 which gas been converted to cartridge with serial number 734. Revolver is in good working order with approximately 10% finish intact with scattered pin prick pitting throughout, the grips are two-piec smooth walnut with an inlaid "F H" in brass letters on the right panel. The belt. holster & sheath are of smooth brown leather construction with no visible makers mark and a brass indian head clasp. The knife is a stag handled bowie marked "Joseph Allen & Sons Sheffield Englade" on the ricasso, "NON-XLL" on the left side of the blade and is etched 'J. Frank Hunt/Caldwell Kansas" on the right side on the blade. This a fantastic opportunity to own a piece of early American history.
