J.Manton Wells Fargo 1878 SxS 10 Ga.
SN: 13977. J. Manton, imported by Whitney Arms Co. Model: J. Manton short double barrel shotgun; Year of Manufacture: 1873; Serial Number marked on the water table, receiver and forearm; Birmingham proofs, 10 gauge, Double barrel shotgun; Barrels have been cut down to18"; Overall Length: 35"; Includes a Railway Express Company framed letter of authenticity dated 1958 and signed by manager Donald Brunswick and addressed to Jerome Bell of Carson City Nevada; Working Order: Damascus double barrels, one percussion cap nipple to broken, cracked and repaired stock. "Property of Wells Fargo and Co Express" tin shield on the buttstock. Triggers and hammers are in working order. This gun was manufactured 1878-1889. COA, dated 1991 from Carson City Auction Co. states that this shotgun was part of the estate of Mr. Jerome Bell from Carson City Nevada. Unfortunately 99% of these are faked, Wells Fargo shotguns are not marked in any way, except for only two (W.F.C. stamped on the rib between the two barrels) that have been proven by original paper work and are in the hands of a private collector. A Wells Fargo shotgun would have been a shotgun of the longest length barrel. Still would make a great display/conversation piece Barrels are pitted, no sighting bead, lower tang broken. NRA Condition-Good as Antique Firearm.
