J.P. SAUER MODEL 25A SIDELOCK DRILLING.
Cal. 16 Ga. 2-9/16"./8x57JR. S# 213322. The highest quality drilling cataloged by Sauer, this very fine combo has 26-3/4" barrels with top rib fitted with flip-over leaf rear and silver bead front sights. Claw scope bases are also installed. Tops of barrels are marked with maker's name and address. Barrel flats are stamped with Imperial German nitro proofs for 16 gauge and 8x57 rifle cartridge. No proof date is found (pre-1922). Case hardened sidelock action features rifle selector on top tang and side safety at rear of left lockplate. Rifle cocking indicator is on top of action. Drilling also features cross bolt third fastener, bushed shotgun strikers, sideclips, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators and double triggers (front set). Action is engraved with 60% coverage varying size scroll within line and geometric borders. Sidelocks are nicely engraved with more scroll off setting game scenes, with setter and flushing pheasant on left and running robuck and doe on right. Maker's name and address are on both lockplates. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# on tang. Steel capped pistol grip buttstock of well streaked and figured European walnut measures 13-7/8" over ribbed horn buttplate. Stock features point pattern grip checkering, shadow line right hand cheekpiece and a steel cartridge trap on toeline with space for four rifle cartridges. Sling loops are present. Action with about 10% case color where protected, is mostly silver gray. Engraving remains clear. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original oil finish with many scattered marks. Checkering is considerably worn. Bores are shiny with some scattered pitting and a good number of raised dents in both barrels. Rifle bore shows some erosion at throat. Action is tight with forend installed. Barrel bushings show considerable use. Mechanically good. (23-7001/MGM). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
