J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl Germany, 20GA double barrel shotgun, S/N 317694 with Abercrombie and Fitch, New York agent’s markings. Letter from Griffin & Howe (keepers of A&F records) records sold Clark Gable in New York store on Nov. 2,1936. Further recording indicates 28” barrels in 20GA with ejectors and 2 ¾” chambers, Mod & Full chokes, and 5 pound 14 oz. Another letter from Robert C. Beach of Griffin and Howe states, “That in his opinion the gun was a gift to CaroleLombard” who was a romantic interest at this time and later his wife. Also a hand written note traces descent from a friend who hunted at the same California duck club as Gables. The gun remains in original near fine condition with90%-95% original blue, 50%-70% case colors going to silver, very good carved and checkered stocks with minor scratches and signs of use. Tight action and crisp interior with bright bores. The stock was shortened to 12 ½” end of wood and 13 ½” to the end of the pad for Ms. Lombard. The original A&F case is included and in very good condition. We know no better documented arm to ownership by golden age film star Clark gable. (C&R) Est.: $7500-$15,000
