J.S. Johnston Signed Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania Kentucky Rifle
Kentucky style percussion rifle/shotgun made by J.S. Johnston of Mc Connellstown, Huntingdon Co., PA., circa 1850. This rifle measures overall 50" with a 36" half octagon rifled barrel in 45 caliber with "J.S. Johnston" stamped behind rear notch sight. Lower barrel is a half octagon smoothbore in 12 gauge with brass ramrod ferrells between barrels on rib. Rifle has unmarked floral engraved back-action locks (possibly made by Johnston) with double set trigger control with front trigger in Huntingdon Lathe-turned style. Curly maple half-stock with stepped brass butt plate, brass trigger guard and floral engraved cap box. Stock has silver thumbpiece and oval and teardrop silver cheekpiece inlays. CALIBER: 45. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall good with metal having slight corrosion and turning to a silvery patina. Brass is unpolished and remains as found. Stock has piano finish worn mostly off except in protected areas with toe area having a crack. No visible repairs or restoration. Dark pitted bores with functioning mechanics.
