J. WOODWARD SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE TRIGGER GAME

GUN WITH CASE. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 1/2". S# 5938 (ca. 1908). The 29" (Woodward standard) dovetailed Whitworth steel bbls. are engraved "James Woodward & Sons 64 St. James's Street London. S.W." and with Whitworth's steel info on slightly raised concave game rib; "3" is gold inlaid at rear of rib, matching "3" in gold on top lever and forend iron indicating the gun was one of a trio. Bbl. flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with serial numbers and "J.W. & S". Casehardened, square back, sidelock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold and covered by usual Woodward T shaped button), side clips, bushed strikers, gold lined tumbler end, cocking indicators in "bug eye" pivots, and double triggers. Action is filed with typical Woodward arcaded fences. Action is engraved in early Woodward house style with 80% coverage, small shaded scroll within scroll borders. "J. Woodward & Sons" is in classic Woodward parchment scroll device on each lockplate. Attractively crotch figured, and wonderfully marbled, European walnut, straight grip, replacement buttstock measures 15 1/2" over old Silver type pad. Stock features classic drop points, point pattern checkering, and vacant silver oval. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .732", L: .737". Restrictions: R: .007" (IC), L: .016" (MOD). Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .024", L: .023". STOCK: DAH: 2 5/16". DAC: 1 1/2+". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. LOP: 15 1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 15 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun comes w/ vintage maker's oak and leather case with brass corners. Top of the case is embossed "H. LINDSAY SCOTT". Case is lined with scarlet cloth, and has Woodward paper label w/ corners attractively scalloped in lid. Case contains 2 piece cleaning rod with mop and brush, square oil bottle marked "William Powell", along with some cleaning patches. CONDITION: fine as partially refurbished. Bbls. retaining about 95% shiny reblue over some light marks. Action was recolored many years ago and retains most of that color over some old pitting mostly at rear of lockplate. Engraving remains good. Well done older restock, retains most of an old oil finish. Checkering possibly original but has been freshened. Forend wood appears to be original with checkering recut and has warped so that tip is not in contact with bbl. Bores are bright and shiny with 1 or 2 minor scattered pits in right bbl. Action is slightly loose. Bbls. appear to be on face. Right ejector will not fire. Case leather is still relatively light in color with large number of marks, chips and rubs. Handle is good although tender. Straps missing. Interior cloth is good to very good with considerable soiling. Label is also soiled and foxed with one rub through. Interior partitions are good with cloth rubbed through in action area. (22-1169/MGM). CURIO. $8,000-14,000.
