Cal. 56-46 Spencer. S# 35356. Bbl. 30 1/4" tapered octagon with 8 groove rifling. Top flat is marked "J. HARDER / LOCK HAVEN PA". German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight with fixed V notch rear sight. Front action ring is marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". Left side has saddle ring bar only with ring removed. Walnut sporting style forearm measures 12 1/8" over pewter cap. Original straight grip stock has wood filler in sling swivel slot. 7 Shot tubular magazine inserts through steel buttplate. "American Gunsmiths" by Frank M. Sellers lists the following: "HARDER, JACOB, (1820-1898). Athens, Pennsylvania, 1838-1860, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, 1860-1888. Patent #319,482, June 9, 1885, breechloading firearm. Multi barrel percussion rifles and patent breechloaders. (MB 12-44)". Weight: 11 lbs., 5.6 oz. CONDITION: barrel has faded to brown patina showing scattered spots of corrosion. Action retains some blue color in protected areas of frame and lock plate. Forearm has worn finish with scratches and small dents having small cracks extending from right side of action. Refinished stock shows numerous scratches and marks. Bore retains strong rifling showing scattered pitting. (01-21348/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
