JAMES O. ROBSON PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE.

Cal. 40. S# 425. Bbl. is 32"; about 1.33" at rear and 1.23" at muzzle. Mfg. 1834-1880 by noted gun maker James O. Robson of Buffalo, NY. He primarily made target style rifles, but also did some shotguns. Most of his customers were of European descent in NY, hence the adornments of German style plus German silver. Nice engraving throughout plus patch box on right side of buttstock. Forend cap appears to be pewter plus some brass trim along with German silver. Globe sight with post insert at muzzle plus elevator adjustable (missing elevator) rear sight having flat top and square notch. Top of rear tang has provision for jack screw used to adjust a scope as often shown in photos of Robson rifles. Barrel markings are on left rear flat along with "CAST STEEL". Trigger guard forms pistol grip and has functional double set triggers. CONDITION: fair to good overall having even brown oxidation on barrel exterior; good bore with distinct rifling having some lightly pitted areas (still nice for mid 1800's). Rib for ramrod thimbles slightly separated at muzzle; no ramrod. Light handling marks on stock along with two cracks by lock attachment screw. Missing hammer attachment screw; hammer engraved like rifle but seems improper for this piece; alignment appears off. Missing nipple. Nice example from noted maker having nice embellishments. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21266/NW). ANTIQUE. $750-1,250.
