JOHN RIGBY SQUARE BRIDGE MAGNUM MAUSER ACTION
RIFLE. Cal. 375 H&H. S# 4093 (Mauser action # 52564). Originally built as a 350 Rigby, this fine rifle has been expertly converted to a 375, as were most 350s. It has a 24" classically styled tapered rnd. bbl. with raised boss over chamber. Bbl. is fitted with a sleeved-on rear sight base holding a 1-standing, 2-folding leaf express sight with platinum lines and a sleeved-on sling eye. Short ramp front sight base is also flush sleeved and holds a silver bead front sight with protector. Top of bbl. is engraved "John Rigby & Co. 43' Sackville St. London. W.". Cal. is engraved on the left rear, and original London nitro proofs for 350 EX are stamped on the bottom (wood removed). Classic magnum-length action with raised square bridge is engraved ".375 Magnum" and "RIGBY-MAUSER" on the receiver ring, which is also stamped with London view proof. Rigby serial number "4093" is stamped on the left side below the wood. Mauser serial number is behind the recoil lug. Bolt with an unaltered handle has two checkered panels on a pear-shaped knob. Flag safety is gold-inlaid "(SAFE)". Original single-stage trigger is retained. Drop box bottom metal has a hinged floorplate retained by the button in the bow, and the Rigby serial number is deeply stamped on the bottom of the bow. Original stock with serial number in bbl. channel is of lightly figured European walnut and measures 13 3/4" over silver-type pad. Stock also features a steel trap gripcap, recoil bolt, sling eye on the toeline, and point pattern checkering at the grip & forend with mullered borders. WEIGHT: 8 lb., 3 oz. CONDITION: very fine, as professionally refinished. Metal parts retaining approx. 90% sympathetic rust reblue, new cal. reengraved. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish with some light scratches and a checkering re-run. Remnants of Kenyan registry numbers are on the toeline behind gripcap. Pad is relatively new. Bore is very fine with some light frosting. Mechanically smooth. An updated all-time classic. (22-2221/MGM). CURIO. $7,500-12,500.
