John Guthrie print Shadow of the Owl
This print deals with the Cherokee tragedy now called the Trail of Tears. During the winter of 1838 and 1839, sixteen thousand Cherokees were forced on to what would be called the Trail of Tears overland to Indian Territory. On the Trail of Tears over 4,000 Cherokees died. The owl, in Cherokee culture, is the messenger of death. In this print, the owl can be seen as a harbinger of ill or by taking the weak and infirm out of their suffering, the owl caused the strength of the Cherokee Nation to prevail. The print is by John Guthrie, is double signed, number 226/1025, and includes a paper cast sculpture of an owl also signed. All professionally matted and framed. Measures 36"x16". A very poignant piece. John Guthrie is a Cherokee artist with many national awards to his credit. His work can be found in private art collections and prestigious Native American art galleries throughout the United States.
