Lot of 37 black & white behind the scenes photographs taken during the filming of the iconic 1949 movie "Sands of Iwo Jima" Scenes were filmed at the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton. Many depict John Wayne with co-stars John Agar, Forrest Tucker, etc. , battle scenes, John Wayne with a captured Japanese sword, John Wayne with General Graves B. Erskine, CG of Camp Pendleton at the time, John Wayne with General Holland "Howlin Mad" B. Smith. USMC legend, who fought on Iwo Jima. Technical advisors Tarawa veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, Colonel David M. Shoup, etc. Many stamped Approved, Hollywood, 1949. The the highlight of the lot is a photograph of John Wayne posing with the real flag raisers Ira Hayes, Navy Corpsman John Bradley Marine corporal Rene Gagnon (It was found out later he was incorrectly identified in the Rosenthal flag-raising photo) Holding rifles. A fantastic group of photographs, one of a kind. These came from the estate of Joe Musso, a personal friend of John Wayne for many years.
