WINNING SILVER AND BRASS INLAID SUSQUEHANA VALLEY “KENTUCKY” RIFLE WITH GOLCHER LOCK. Cal. 52 smooth bore. NSN. Browned, slightly swamped 42 3/8" octagon bbl. is not maker marked. It is fitted with U-notch rear and brass front sights. Trade flintlock with rebated tail has some scroll and line border engraving and is marked "JOSh GOLCHER" under pan. Lock is fitted with serpentine cock, semi water proof pan, bridled friction frizzen, and feather spring with simple spear finial. Full length brass capped stock of very fine curly grain hard maple is shaped with Roman nose comb and has traditional small right hand cheekpiece. Rifle is mostly brass mounted with large sideplate, chamfered trigger guard with spur forming grip and wide crescent buttplate. Brass inlays consist of 9" return along toeline. Another return from top of butt to point of comb and a continuation from front of trigger guard to thimble. This inlay has fancy scroll border. Right side of butt has exceptionally fancy brass inlaid patchbox with multipierced scrolled sideplates and matching finial. A matching brass inlay is on left side of butt which runs top to bottom behind cheekpiece which also has many piercings. These brass inlays are well engraved with attractive geometric and foliate detail. Stock also has many silver inlays including very fine multipierced 8-pointed star within ovate double borders on face of cheekpiece and oval crestplate at top of grip. Silver teardrops are in front and back of grip and in front of sideplate and lock. Left side of butt has two more tear drops and losenges in an arc following buttplate. Stock attaches to bbl. with 4 brass bolts through fancy silver escutcheons. Striped hickory ramrod mounts through two beaded and faceted brass pipes and matching thimble. A silver plaque with chain is attached to trigger guard bow which is engraved “KENTUCKY RIFLE ASSN" "1985" "BEST INLAID RIFLE". CONDITION: fine as restored. Bbl. retaining over 90% good quality rebrown over some scattered pits. Lock shows cleaning to silver. Wood is complete, sound and has old light refinish and is quite attractive. Brass is nicely toned, silver lightly tarnished. Bore is somewhat pitted. Bbl. appears to have been reconverted with small smooth touchhole, lock in original flint a possible replacement which does not fit the mortice as well as it should. Silver inlay is missing from point of comb, tacks remain. A very attractive and well appointed Kentucky rifle. (01-21128/MGM). ANTIQUE. $12,000-16,000.
