Kentucky Rifle Signed L.F. for Lewis Fondersmith
Percussion Kentucky rifle signed "L.F." in script for Lewis Fondersmith. Rifle could have been made later in his career when he was in Fayette County, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with rifle having a design which resembles the river system (possibly the Ohio or Monongahela?). Actual meaning is lost to history. Rifle measures 55-1/2" overall with a 40" octagon 44 caliber rifled barrel signed "L.F" with rifle sights. Floral engraved "R. Ashmore Warrented" marked percussion lock with double set trigger control. Full curly maple stock with architecture matching Huntingdon-Fayette county areas with brass hardware including four piece patchbox with possible river design and unique hidden button release near hinge. Stock is incised carved in a floral vine pattern often scene on rifles made in this area. Forestock has six coin silver escutcheon plates. Comes with original striped hardwood ramrod with gunsmith made threaded tip. Interesting rifle in need of more research. CALIBER: 44. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall good with metal exhibiting oxidation and turning plum. Wood appears to have been cleaned with light coat of oil. Stock has cut in forestock, possible for takedown purposes. Dark bore with good mechanics.
