Maria is the first and only artist to take this medium into the fine art world. We are grateful that she was willing to design, create, and donate this beautiful, custom, one-of-a-kind Kudu piece specifically for our chapter’s auction tonight.
Maria’s Biography
Maria D’Souza is a true wildlife enthusiast and an international award-winning artist. The core of her art is to capture the animal’s spirit flowing on from its natural life cycle, thus honoring that life. As a fine art sculptor, she uses the world’s most iconic animals that are ethically sourced as her canvas with themes ranging from western to contemporary. She combines vivid color with exquisite materials, such as custom-made beads, semi-precious gems, tooled metals and leather, to create a one-of-a-kind D’Souza Original.
D’Souza is known as the first and only artist to have taken this medium into the fine art world. The D’Souza’s Originals Beaded Animal Skull Art are some of the most prized and sought after. Her work can be found in private collections, and galleries as well as in the permanent collections of the Booth Western Art Museum, Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Cartersville, GA and Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center, Hendersonville, TN.
Having traveled and resided in 6 different continents, embarked on wildlife observatory tours in Africa, the Middle East and North America, D’Souza’s artistic inspirations are as varied as the cultures and places she has lived. Drawing on her Portuguese-Indian ancestry, D’Souza strives to honor these majestic, awe inspiring, creatures with new life through her art one bead at a time. There’s nothing tame with this wild spirit; she is the “Art of the Wild”.
