New and exciting permit in Iran! The Persian Wildlife Foundation and the Wild Sheep Foundation are working together to offer a 10-15 day hunt (or longer if needed) in the officially recognized habitat of the Larestan sheep area in Iran.
In 2011, with funding from the US-based Persian Wildlife Foundation (PWF), a 501(c)3 organization, the Tehran-based Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation (PWHF) also a non-profit organization performed a three-month survey of Larestan sheep and estimated the overall population at fewer than 1,000 head. The study also addressed matters of range and taxonomy. This hunt includes all licenses, tent camp or game warden outpost accommodations. Hunting dates for these Larestan sheep hunts will be between now and February 19, 2014. Purchaser of this hunt does not have to apply for any permits or special transportation. The firearm permit will be paid by the Outfitter. Purchaser is responsible for the outfitting fee, tips and miscellaneous expenses. A non-hunter is not included but can be negotiated with the outfitter. Hunters winning a license at the auction will be allowed to choose which outfitter they wish to hunt with, out of those whom have agreed to participate. Winning bidder of this hunt will send the money directly to WSF. The funds will be held by WSF until all visas and hunting licenses are approved and hunter is scheduled with the outfitter of choice.
This was a radically new proposal for Iran and made at a time when many Iranians are debating whether or not, Iran should be closed to hunting. However, PWHF was able to explain how WSF has successfully auctioned rare sheep permits for other jurisdictions – in and out of the US – and that the result would be highly beneficial for the threatened Larestan sheep population. The proceeds of this conservation auction will be directed towards Larestan mouflon conservation in Iran in cooperation with the Department of Environment with the majority of funds directed to create and manage a new reserve for Larestan sheep.
The Larestan mouflon sheep is one of the smallest and rarest of wild sheep in the world, and only found in southern Iran. The mountains of Larestan are mostly rocky and are accentuated by steep cliffs. Deep crags break up the foothills, stretching from the hilltops down to the plains. This landscape is the perfect habitat for Larestan mouflon sheep. Don’t miss the opportunity to bid on this rare permit! For the future of wildlife conservation in Iran, it is extremely important that these hunts be conducted in a manner so as to achieve the best possible results.
