This wool bunting flag measures approx. 140" x 69" and is a 38-star pattern having seven columns of five stars followed by a single column of three stars. This type of flag was in use beginning in 1876 with the admission of Colorado as the 38th state to 1889 with the admission of North Dakota as the 39th state. The white cotton stars are edge-sewn, and the canton is cut so that the stars show from both sides. There is a 1 5/8" cotton hoist with brass grommets on each end; the hoist also has four small straps sewn to it, likely for better support on the pole. The name "D.C. Smith" is written with an early dip pen and ink on the hoist. Due to the early style of construction of this flag, we feel it is likely from the centennial era around 1876. CONDITION: The flag is surprisingly solid, with some discoloration due to age. All seams are tight and remain strong. (02-23627/BF). $400-800.
