BELONGING TO KORVETTENKAPITAN HELMUT ROSENBAUM. This extensive group consists of a photo album presumably belonging to Kapitan Rosenbaum with numerous pictures of him & his u-boats. Other photographs show military parades or assemblies & the album culminates with photographs of graves including his own. The lot further contains several victory pennants, many of which have brass connectors to join one to another. They include a yellow bodied pennant with a sinking ship & “650” in black. / A yellow bodied pennant with a sinking ship & “1700” in green. / A yellow bodied pennant with “1050” in black. / A yellow bodied pennant with “950” in black. / A red bodied pennant with “850” in black & a lg. gray bordered, white pennant with a sinking ship & “22600” in black along with a green, white & red flag superimposed by a black Maltese cross with “U-73 (Party symbol) 1942” in dark yellow stitching. This exorbitantly lg. Victory pennant likely refers to the sinking of the British carrier Eagle on August 11, 1942 by Rosenbaum & his U-73. There are also several photographs of the Eagle along with a photograph of an Eagle survivor. There are 3 photographs of German vessels mounted on cardboard. There is a naval officer’s car pennant presumably belonging to Rosenbaum. There are also 2 original photographs of Rosenbaum receiving his Knight’s Cross & a photo of Admiral Burchardi. Lastly, there is a naval dagger measuring 60 1/2" in length with an etched blade featuring naval motifs. Blade marked at the ricasso, “(knight’s head) WKC”. Crossguard & pommel are gilded brass. Creamy, white grip is wire wrapped. Gilded brass scabbard. Captain Rosenbaum was born in Saxony in 1913 & graduated in 1932. He served on several boats but is most famous for his exploits as captain of U-73. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross the day after he sank the British aircraft carrier Eagle on August 11, 1942 & the following day he sank a British destroyer. He was then promoted to commander of the 30th U-boat Flotilla, however he was killed in an aircraft crash on May 10, 1944. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: information about Kapitan Rosenbaum & his service. CONDITION: many of the pennants are quite tattered but remain solid & display well. The larger pennant shows light overall wear with minor dirt & staining. Photos remain crisp & clear.
