This photograph was found in the oldest house in Clinton, Maine & was identified by the family as George A. Weymouth who served in the 1st Maine Cavalry during the Civil War. Weymouth was killed in action during the Kilpatrick-Dahlgren Raid that took place between February 28 & March 3 of 1864. The raid was an ill-fated attempt by Union Cavalry against the lightly defended Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. The purpose of the raid was to free Union prisoners of war held in the city of Richmond. The plan was created by General H. J. Kilpatrick but fell apart when Kilpatrick’s men were stopped by Confederate forces northwest of Richmond. Colonel Dahlgren’s supporting column marched east of the city & engaged Confederate troops. Dahlgren was killed during the battle & documents found on his body by Confederates detailed plans to burn the city of Richmond & assassinate the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, as well as his cabinet.
