LATE 19TH CENTURY EUROPEAN INFANTRY FOOT OFFICER’S
SWORD WITH UNASSOCIATED SCABBARD. Overall length: 36 3/4". Blade length: 30 1/2". This sword is of a type and style known to have been used by infantry foot officers throughout many countries in Europe during the last half of the 19th century. The blade is etched over half its length with various foliate & military motifs. The ricasso is stamped “(king’s head) (knight’s head) W.K & C”. Brass hilt with double kidney boat-type guard with one folding side. Large cross guard with plain knuckle bow that screws into the melon-shaped pommel. There is a semi-urn shaped capstan rivet at the top with a wire-wrapped grip. The scabbard is for a US M1860 staff & field officer’s sword. It has a plated body with gilded brass mounts. CONDITION: the blade has a medium gray patina with areas of light staining. The hilt has a mellow mustard patina throughout. Scabbard does show some wear to the finish, but retains over half the gilding on the mounts. (02-19382/BF). $100-200.
