Lot Includes: Two Manuals: One WW1 "Defense Against Gas" manual dated 1919, and WW2 "Basic Field Manual Defense Against Chemical Attack" manual Dated 1942. The M4 was a US Government Army Issue in World War II, vintage 1941-1942 Horse Gas Masks are very scarce. Due to the large size, most were discarded after the war. Occasionally, one will pop up, but most are incomplete or in poor condition. The M4 Horse Gas Mask has two large filter canisters, one placed on each shoulder of the horse. It has a chest mounted pack, and a rubber mask for the horse's muzzle. Flexible hoses run between the components, and leather straps keep everything secure to the horse. Horses (Cavalry) and Pack Mules were not as common in WWII as they were in WWI, making the Horse Gas Mask all the more rare. If you are a serious gas mask collector, consider the chance of finding another M4 Horse gas mask. One WW2 M5 Gas Mask Carriers and Parts Lot: leather canisters, leather double canister carriers, hoses, and mask carrier. (hoses and mouthpiece are incorrect, hoses may be another M4 set) The M5 and M4 horse gas masks were identical in all but one aspect--the position of the canisters. On the M5, both canisters hung from the right shoulder of the horse. On the M4, one canister hung from each shoulder. The M5 mask was designed for the Cavalry. The soldier on the horse carried his rifle in the cavalry standard on the horse’s left shoulder. In World War II, 39,159 M4 and M5 horse gas masks were produced.   Two Canvas Carrying Accessory Cases: One M4 and one M5. Even without the actual gas mask, these items are still extremely rare and scarce to come by. In 1941 and 1942, the U.S. government issued the M4 and M5 gas masks for the horses being used in service. The mask/accessory carrying case is in near mint condition with the M4 having a stronger less worn "US HORSE GAS MASK"  Marking than the M5 case witch shows a little more wear on the outer flap. The brass fittings, buckles, and leather straps are all present with little wear. The leather straps and buckles are in perfect working order and condition, displaying no damage or paint loss to the buckles and bales, but there is minor paint loss to the outside flap lift buttons on the M5 case & not so much on the M4.  One Rare Carrier for the Horse Gas Mask that slips on the hose that clips to the bottom of the halter between the bag and the mask on the horse mouth nose.  Excellent condition. **Overall everything is in excellent condition with the leather M5 double canister holder and canvas bag showing the most wear but still nice. Everything else in extremely excellent shape.** $2,000-$3,000
