“Lion’s Watch” – Original Oil by John Banovich
Medium: Oil on Belgian Linen
Dimensions: 5h x 7w in (12.70h x 17.78w cm)
Retail Value: $4,400
Catalog No.: JBO1269
Description:
A moment of stillness on the savanna—powerful in its restraint, timeless in its presence. In “Lion’s Watch,” world-renowned wildlife artist John Banovich captures the essence of the African plains with a masterful touch. The warm light of the lion’s mane plays against a cool blue sky, while a distant lioness introduces movement, rhythm, and quiet tension to the canvas.
This small-format painting is anything but modest. Through its scale and brushwork, it becomes an intimate window into the wild—where the landscape breathes, and the lion holds his ground in solitude and strength.
Artist Statement:
“In Lion’s Watch, I sought to convey the quiet majesty of a lion at rest, his presence anchoring the canvas in strength and solitude. The male’s golden mane catches the warm light, contrasting with the cool blue sky, while the distant lioness adds a subtle rhythm to the composition. The interplay of texture and color reflects the savanna’s vastness—soft grasses, sunlit earth, and the endless horizon. I wanted the brushwork to feel alive, allowing the landscape to breathe around the lion, grounding him in his domain yet evoking the ever-present sense of movement and life.”
— John Banovich
