Native American Style "Blanket Gun" Conversion of a Austrian 1854 Lorenz Infantry Rifle Type I. The Lorenz was the third most used rifle musket during the American Civil War, with US purchases in excess of 250,000 and documented CS purchases of at least 100,000, which explains its presence on the north American continent. Native Americans would Hide these under Blankets. The women would pack these under dresses to hide them from getting confiscation by the Cavalry. The lock is marked with the Austrian Eagle to the rear of the hammer and 860 to the front, indicating that it was produced in 1860. No other markings visible. Barrel has been shorted to 13 1/4", hammer action works, the nipple is broken off, stock has been cut down and measures 21 3/4". Heavily decorated with brass tacks (A couple missing) fringed leather strips attached with tacks at the front & rear of the gun. Hand made leather sling attached adorned with brass tacks, and sewn with sinew. Rusty, pitted relic condition. Has seen very hard use.
