(1) Red clay bear with turquoise eyes signed Nick Halsey. Symbols carved into clay throughout: bear paw and a fish at rear, arrowhead on back up by neck, and other markings. Measures 5" in length, 3" tall. Has small chips here and there and out of paws. Nick Halsey is a self-taught Indian artist, has been working for 22 years in an art medium called ''clay sculpturing.'' He was born in Fort Yates, ND, on the Standing Rock Reservation in 1949, and is an enrolled member of the Hunkpapa Lakota the same tribe and reservation as the great medicine man Sitting Bull. He learned the basics of his art from his former wife. Halsey uses traditional methods to make clay sculptures. However, instead of making pots, dishes and other typical Pueblo art pieces, he creates human and animal forms including buffalo, bears and eagles. Through the use of common material such as tree bark and animal dung, Halsey is able to vary the color of his sculptures from the traditional Santa Clara red and black to white, brown, ebony and other contemporary.
(2) Resin nicely carved bears with turquoise eyes and turquoise fish in mouths. Smaller bear's fish is broken off at head and he measures 2 1/2" tall x 1" width; larger bear measures 2" tall x 4" long.
(4) Small bear fetishes made of various material, some inlaid with turquoise and/or mother of pearl.
(1) Apache Gan Dancer sculpted by Mikael Redman in 1975. The piece sits on a 250 ct. turquoise stone base. Comes with a custom made display case and note about the item and its artist. Numbered 415 of 900.
