Lot of Two (2) Japanese Tanto Daggers: (1) Diamond-shaped blade, double edged, with a wavy oil-quenched temperline. No habaki blade collar. Dark hardwood mounts, polished smooth with a pleasing grain to the wood. Brass seppa spacer at the bottom of the grip. Bone peg retains the blade. Blade has some light rust pitting at the base where the habaki would have covered it, and a couple of small rust dots on the body of the blade. Tang is unsigned with one hole and has a rough rusty patina. Wood mounts are nicely made and finished. Age is late WWII to post-war occupation. (2) Traditional made tanto, with a 9-3/8'' hira-zukuri blade. Nicely formed tang with one hole is unsigned. Condition of the blade makes it hard to determine the temper line, but it looks like a narrow straight suguha temper. Handle covered in rayskin is missing its kashira (end cap fitting) and menuki (handle ornaments). Black lacquered wood scabbard has painted designs of flowers and leaves at the bottom. There are some losses to the lacquer on the scabbard and it has thread wrapped around a split or hole in the middle. Top scabbard fitting (koiguchi) is loose. There is a small side knife (ko-gatana & kozuka) present that has a signature on it. The kozuka handle is made of copper with a raised design of a dragon; handle is in rough shape, with numerous dents and dings. Tanto blade has some minor edge nicks, scratches, spider rust pitting, age graying, and some dings on the back spine. Most likely a hand-forged blade dating from 1850 to 1920. Est.: $400-$600/lot.
