The Model 1936 Mohair Cord Girth was last girth introduced into the long lineage of US Army Cavalry Equipment. Fashioned of cords of spun mohair, this girth was also apparently intended for use with both the Model 1926 and Model 1930 Officer Training Saddles. The fourteen cords are tied into two steel buckles on each end and have three woven reinforcement bands across the width of the girth for strength and to prevent the longitudinal cords from twisting. Measuring 45.5†long, this girth is complete with all the hardware, to include the four buckles and the “D†rings on the each of the two outer bands for anchoring the cantle bag tie-down straps. These Model 1936 Girths, due in no small part to having been made of mohair, did not survive in great numbers and are a scarce item from the final days of the US Cavalry.  Lot also includes one WW2 Nylon Variant Model 1936 Girth. This girth was manufactured in the form of a Model 1936 Mohair Cord Girth. However instead of the cording made of mohair which was a critical commodity during World War Two, this specimen was made of the white, flat nylon strapping as was used to construct the Paratrooper's jump harness. Two double thickness lengths of the 1.75" wide strapping make up the body of the girth. These two lengths are attached and supported by three cross sections of the same strapping material to support the girth and to prevent the girth from twisting. The girth measures 45.5" long and features the same four roller buckles found on the standard Model 1936 Girth. This is undoubtedly a wartime production item, showing the adjustments that were necessary to compensate for the shortage of certain materials. A rare item from the final days of the US Cavalry.   **Having seen some use, the mohair cords attaching to one of the buckles, as can be seen in the photos, have come partially undone. With some time and patience this area could be restored. There is also a single strand in the center of the girth that has come unraveled, and again it could be restored sufficiently so as not to be noticeable. The Nylon on the strapping shows wear but the stitching is tight, and with the exception of some light fraying and some staining in spots this girth is in exceptional shape. Overall both girths are in excellent condition considering the age.** $250-$350
