Lot Includes two Civil War-pattern McClellan leather hooded stirrups. The color, pattern and condition confirm that this is a perfectly matched pair, and that they were used together. This pair measures 8 ¼†high, 6 ¾†wide, and they feature solid oak frames with no splits or cracks, with full sized 2 ¾†wide treads. There are three letters stamped on the front center of each hood, "J S P",perhaps the initials of a soldier who applied them to identify his saddle. The hoods are attached to the frames with brass rivets, and based on additional holes in the sides of the frames, the hoods were replaced during the period of use. Stirrups were used both with and without hoods, based on current regulations and in no small way the preference of the rider. As the saddles were refurbished as was required due to the wear and tear of being in the field, stirrups were one of the key elements of the saddles that were afforded special attention. Replacing the damaged or worn hoods would have been a routine step in refurbishing the saddle. **Very good condition. The hoods retain a nice belled front, a distinctive point on the front lower edge and a tooled line around the outer edges of the hoods. There is some flexing and crazing to the surface of the leather hoods which retain their full form with no edge wear or tears, and the leather is still pliable. Civil War era leather stirrups are some of the more difficult saddle parts to locate. In any condition, pairs of Civil War era stirrups seldom find their way onto the open market place, and finding a matched pair in the condition in which this pair presents is almost impossible.** $300-$400
