M1825-1840 U.S. Naval Officers Sword
Eagle head sword. 32 1/2" straight, fullered blade. counter-guard an open-wing American Eagle with shield, a seated female in a Ti skirt sitting on a crate with her feet resting on a cannon with two royal crowns, the liberty cap is at the top, the American shield is behind the crate. The single-edge straight blade has traces of original bluing and is decorated with gilt etched designs of floral sprays and military trophies. The grips are two panels of fluted pearl enclosed in a brass strip with a leaf and berry pattern. The pommel is an closed beak eagle's head. The knuckle-bow is in a rococo style with a Greek Warrior on one side and a scaled oval on the other. The all-brass scabbard ends in a fluted finial. Floral motif on the frog stud. The ricasso under the counter-guard is marked what appears to be "B&S", we could not find any reference to this. Blade is age darkened with traces of gilt etching visible. Brass guard is very good. Fluted pearl grips have some minor flaking on both sides. Leather blade washer is gone. Brass scabbard has a minor dent, the throat is loose, and the left grip panel is a little loose. Overall good condition for it's age. Believe this to be a rare configuration as we could not find any matching sword in our research.
