The brass hilt shows much of its original gilt and the cast motifs are crisp. The urn shaped pommel has an eagle on one side and plain shield on the other. The knucklebow has a central motif of a flower and twisted bolts of lightning. The grip is sharkskin, with all binding wire present/tight. The folding counterguard has wreath with American shied with crossed cannons, rifles banners. The eagle on the guard has no shield on its breast. The scabbard has 3 rings. The ring mounts are relief cast with simple leaves. The scabbard drag has star on one side, and crossed flags on the other, scribed line around the drag The 29"blade etching is vivid and set off by its frosted background. The obverse shows a geometric base trophy of arms with a shield, quiver and U.S. The reverse has “Ames sword. Co. / Chicopee / Mass” (1881 due to restructuring began marking blades AMES SWORD CO).etched just above the ricasso, with American eagle. Overall very good condition, there is a split in the shark skin, and some discoloration on the drag. Indian was period.
