This is an early war-era saddle that was re-rigged during the war with the 1864 rig. That is why the rigging includes the spaded "D" ring and additional rivets above the "D" ring. There is no manufacture plate on this saddle and it does not appear that one was ever mounted. The shape of the tree indicated early production. The saddle shows honest war service wear and repairs here and there. Some of the rawhide has been mended but the rigging is splendid and complete girth straps. It was probably retired soon after the y straps replacements or likely never sent out again for service until it was surplused out. The wooden stirrups are original and correct. There is a break on one of the Y strap near the D ring. It is not cut through but a piece of leather was glued on the back not visible from the front to keep it from breaking. The shield is blank but it has been there for a very long time. More than likely this saddle was refurbished by one of the federal arsenals therefore no plate would have been added. Also another unusual thing worth noting is that there are four symmetrical filled-in holes on the pommel. They were filled in and blended in but are noticeable. The only plausible explanation is that perhaps during the arsenal rework that screws were put in to reinforce the tree.  (SADDLE STAND NOT INCLUDED) $1,500-$3,000
