M1881 4th Infantry Officer's Dress Helmet
This helmet dates to the late 1880s to early 1890s. This was intended for use with the "dress" uniform for ceremonial occasions. It is beautifully made from cork covered with dark blue fabric Made by the M.C. Lilly Co of Columbus, Ohio, stamped on the sweatband. There is a full blue drawstring cloth lining present. The exterior does have cracking in the leather trim around the brim, otherwise good condition. The Helmet plate displays the Great Seal of the United States, with the American Eagle with a banner in its beak stating: 'E PLURIBUS UNUM," with crossed rifles, and "4". Crossed rifles on the chinstrap buttons identifies this helmet as being used by a member of the 4th Infantry regiment. Gold tone embroidered chin strap, white horse hair plume (Infantry) by Raymond & Whitlock, stem American Eagle with shield under a star. From the Joseph Musso Collection
