LIEUTENANT A.J.R. MACKENZIE OF THE ROYAL HORSE GUARDS. Large Ring Bolo Mauser C96 Broomhandle wood shoulder stock featuring a brass band reinforcement band around the body below the checkered lid release button, with an additional brass reinforcement band running across the width of the lid. Stock iron is numbered "29328". Interior of lid is mounted with a plaque that reads "PRESENTED TO Lieut. A.J.R. Mackenzie. ROYAL HORSE GUARDS/ ALONG WITH FIELD GLASS/ BY HIS MANY FRIENDS AND WELL WISHERS/ N. GLENMUICK, BALLATER, UPPER DEESIDE AND ABERDEEN, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS LEAVING FOR SOUTH AFRICA/ WITH FINCASTLE'S HORSE FEB 1902". Research indicates that "Fincastle's Horse" was the 31st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, and that A.J.R. Mackenzie (Allan James Reginald) died while serving with the West African Frontier Force in 1903 from ptomaine poisoning. CONDITION: stock exhibits scattered marks and minor impressions from storage and handling overall. Stock body exhibits a crack through the lid release button to the screw, a crack on the rear stemming from the hinge plate, and a crack on both bottom corners that exhibits old adhesive repairs. Lid exhibits a repaired crack that runs the length of the panel, with a replaced section at one end. Tension spring and screw are not present. (02-16945-9/MLW). $500-1,000.
