MID 18TH CENTURY FLINTLOCK OFFICER'S FUSIL BY

RICHARD WILSON. Cal. 66. NSN. The 37 1/4" bbl. w/ barley corn brass front sight & bayonet lug on bottom is marked w/ "LONDON", "GP" & "V" proofs along w/ crowned initials "RW" (Richard Wilson). Bbl. tang has filed in sighting groove & mounts to Fusil in early style w/ screw from bottom. Early style lock w/ rnd. bodied, deeply arched plate features serpentine cock, inset rounded pan, unbridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ fleur-de-lis finial. Lockplate & cock are engraved w/ lg. open scroll. "WILSON" is very lightly engraved at center of plate. Early style handrail stock appears to be of elm & extends to within 3 1/2" of muzzle w/ brass cap. Stock is pinned to bbl. & has raised carved beaver tail around bbl. tang. Stock is brass mounted, buttplate having tall steeple top tang which is lightly engraved matching lock. Escutcheon plate w/ matching engraving is tacked to top of wrist w/ square nails. Triangular sideplate & trigger guard w/ stylized acorn finial are engraved in a different manner. Steel ramrod is held by 2 heavy turned pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: bbl. & lock retain a dark brown patina w/ scattered deeper oxidation. Stock retains most of an old oil finish w/ some repaired cracks at grip & along bbl. channel. Brass is nicely toned. Interior of lock shows considerable reworking. Frizzen is replacement. Rusted bore, lock operable. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20547/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
