RIFLE BY GEORGE SPANGLER. Cal. 45. S# 728. Bbl. 32" heavy set, engraved “FOND DU LAC” & “WI????” along w/ “728” on flat, full length rib. There are silver bands around breech ends. Breech iron is nicely scroll engraved. Back spring percussion locks w/ flat faced serpentine hammers are engraved in a similar manner. American walnut stock has German silver mounts which include ovate right hand patchbox, crescent buttplate w/ 4" shaped return & triggerguard w/ pineapple finial & spur at grip. A running deer inlay made of copper (?) is on face of swept right hand shadow line cheekpiece. A hickory ramrod mounts through two plain iron pipes (one missing) & German silver thimble. CONDITION: bbl. & locks w/ old cleaning to gray brown. German silver, also cleaned, is quite bright. Bbl. sights are missing. Stock w/ old oil refinish. Grip was once checkered & it is now nearly nonexistent. Fair to good bores, strong rifling. Locks do hold full cock but are quite mushy. Consignor’s notes state rifle is attributed to George Spangler. (01-19903/MGM). ANTIQUE. $700-1,500.
