CARBINE WITH 58 CAL. RIFLED BARREL NOTORIOUS FOR ITS INVOLVEMENT IN THE "HALL CARBINE AFFAIR" WHICH PARTIALLY LED TO GENERAL FREMONT'S RELIEF FROM COMMAND ALONG WITH 2 CARTE DE VISITE OF GENERAL FREMONT. NSN. One of 5,000 Model 1843's considered obsolete that were purchased from the government at $3.50 each & were immediately resold to U.S. forces under John Fremont for $22 each. Before they were shipped, the bbls. were rifled to 58 caliber by W.W. Marston of New York. The 2nd & 9th Illinois Cavalry regiments were armed w/ these carbines during the Civil War. This example is of standard 1843 configuration w/ the exception of the rifled bbl. It has 21" rnd. bbl., saddle ring bar on left side & side lever opening mechanism on right. Breechblock is marked w/ usual "S. NORTH" name & address & is dated 1850. Right side of bbl. shank is stamped w/ inspectors initials "WN". Walnut stock is iron mounted & inspectors marks are on each side of side panels behind action. The initials "NF"(?) are carved on left comb. The original sm. cleaning rod is present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2 CDV's of Major General Fremont, one by E. Anthony showing the General standing w/ his sword. The other w/ Fremont signature by Charles D. Fredericks also of New York showing the General seated. CONDITION: good to very good. Bbl. & action have traces of arsenal bright polish but are mostly brown patina. Breechblock has traces of original case hardening color. Stock w/ most of its original finish has considerable marks & minor dents. Inspectors marks are somewhat obscured. Fair to good bore w/ scattered pitting throughout. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20468/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
