EXPERIMENTAL CARTRIDGE BLOCK ATTACHMENT. Cal. 45-70. S# 53296. A small number of 1873 Springfield rifles were made up using this attachment. 1,008 Were for 45-70, only 100 for 50-70. This 8 shot 45-70 example, like essentially all known examples is, made up of parts removed & disposed of. These parts were available through the 1940's. Most rifles seen on the market have been assembled at a later time. The key to making one was finding an original lock w/ special milling cut around front screw to attach rear portion of assembly. The lock on this rifle, a standard Model 1873 has that milling cut. This rifle also features proofs on rear of bbl., long range sight, slim action, arched breech block dated 1873. Typical walnut stock & iron mounts. The cartridge block is made of lightweight open grain walnut & has sheet tin positioning pieces inlet into back. Interchangeable blocks are held by a pivoting lever at rear of holder. CONDITION: metal parts are nearly all dark brown patina w/ some cleaning highlights. Inspectors marks are not found in wood w/ old oil refinish. Channel for block holder is newly inlet & darkened to simulate age. Holding mechanism retains most of its original blue finish. Cartridge block is stained dark w/ cleaned highlights. Bore is fair to good, dirty w/ some light pitting. Mechanically good. (01-20338/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
